Richmond’s Next Big Thing got a little bit bigger this week. At a press conference held Tuesday at The Diamond, a parade of representatives from across the city took turns at the podium explaining all of the highlights of the Eastern League All-Star Week presented by Genworth.

With the Richmond Flying Squirrels playing host, what’s normally a two-day event has doubled in length for 2019 with venues across the city serving as venues for various related celebrations, July 7-10.

The festivities kick off on Sunday, July 7 with Mayor Lavar Stoney’s All-Star Week Kick-off on Brown’s Island. The free event will feature music by Reggae Artist Mighty Joshua and The Trongone Band and food by a collection of Richmond’s favorite food trucks.

The party moves to Virginia Credit Union Live! at Richmond Raceway on Monday night for the All-Star Country Music Jam on July 8. Richmond native and WWE star Mickie James and The Heaters will get the music flowing before headliners Big & Rich, Cowboy Troy, and DJ Sinister take the stage.

On July 9, the party really revs up with the All-Star Pep Rally to be held in downtown Richmond from 11am-1pm before the Celebrity Home Run Derby that night. The Home Run Derby will bring together athletes and coaches with Richmond connections including NASCAR driver Elliott Sadler; former VCU basketball stars Eric Maynor and Mo Alie-Cox; VCU Basketball Coach, Mike Rhoades; University of Richmond Basketball Coach, Chris Mooney; Richmond native and former NFL player, Michael Robinson; Former University of Richmond and NFL player, Tim Hightower; and former University of Virginia and NFL player, Aaron Brooks. The night will wind down with an on-field concert by Richmond band Three Sheets to the Wind and fireworks.

Wednesday, July 10 kicks off with an All-Star Block Party at The Diamond from 11am-1pm before The Eastern League All-Star Game takes center stage. The game will bring together some of professional baseball’s brightest future stars with each team being led by a celebrity coach. The evening will also feature post-game fireworks.

During the game, the first winner of the All-Star Legacy Scholarship will be announced. The All-Star Legacy Scholarship is an initiative between Richmond Flying Squirrels Charities and partners including Genworth Financial that will recognize students in the Richmond region who are committed to improving their community and are involved in an athletic sport.
