As the world prepares to celebrate Earth Day on Monday, April 22, we take a look at one of our own member organizations, Keep Virginia Beautiful, which works daily to celebrate the beauty that is Virginia and preserve it for future generations.
What does Keep Virginia Beautiful do?
The Mission of Keep Virginia Beautiful is to engage and unite Virginians to improve our natural and scenic environment. This means we participate in lots of litter cleanups, we speak to groups about litter prevention, and raise awareness of our mission by at events and festivals.
How long has Keep Virginia Beautiful been around?
Initially formed in 1953 as the “Virginia Anti-Litterbug Council,” we just finished celebrating our 65th Anniversary!
What have been some of Keep Virginia Beautiful’s biggest successes?
We’re very proud of our partnership with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) in 2017, to help support the agency’s Adopt-a-Highway program. We are working to boost the number of people who will commit to “adopt” a two-mile stretch of highway in their community by picking up litter and recyclables at least twice a year for three years.
What are you as an organization most excited about in the coming year?
We are participating in the Great America Cleanup the first weekend in May, transforming Hampton Roads with two days of river cleanups, dumpsite cleanups, community gardens, recycling events, park maintenance, and community beautification projects. We will be hosting a golf tournament on June 10th at Stonehenge Golf & Country Club in Midlothian. Each November KVB co-host an all-inclusive recycling event with RMA in their parking lot, where people are invited to drive through to recycle electronics, shred documents, and much more. It will also be our 6th Annual Shiver in the River on February 29, 2020 (a leap year)!
Is there a way for businesses to get involved with Keep Virginia Beautiful?
Yes! We have a Business Membership opportunity for businesses who want to be linked to our website as supporters. We participate in Employee Engagement events, where we conduct litter cleanups, and other team-building events that benefit communities. We also encourage businesses to adopt their nearby roads through the Adopt-a-Highway program!
What’s a fun fact about Keep Virginia Beautiful?
We were recently at The Virginia Beer Company in Williamsburg for the release of a delicious Keep Virginia Beautiful beer, an IPA that benefits our organization.
