We are excited to have local business owner and Richmond advocate, Maureen Egan, as a moderator for our upcoming Farm to Table Forum.
Maureen Egan co-founded Real Richmond Food Tours after writing Insiders’ Guide to Richmond, VA for Globe Pequot Press in 2010. She’s created numerous tours throughout Richmond’s historic neighborhoods that showcase their culinary and cultural offerings to thousands of visitors and residents alike. In 2014 Maureen co-founded Fire, Flour & Fork, an annual gathering for the food curious that puts Richmond’s cuisine scene front and center for 4 days in November.
What’s your favorite part about the local farm to table movement?
Eating and meeting. I can eat the way I want to eat at home and in town–mostly healthy– and support chefs, farmers, and producers whom I work with. I love knowing the people I’m buying from at the markets, seeing their goods in groceries, and seeing it on the menu and my plate at restaurants.
Do you have a favorite local dish, or local produce, or local recipe?
It’s usually dessert at a restaurant or bakery, but the heirloom tomatoes at the farmers’ markets – Cherokee purple are a favorite and local strawberries and blueberries.
What’s your favorite part of being a local business owner?
Connecting locals and visitors to our local restaurants (and sometimes farms and perhaps a cidery or distillery) and seeing people so amazed at what Richmond has to offer. I LOVE hearing that our customers are supporting and rooting for our local folks after being introduced to them on tours and events.
