Security & Loss Prevention Association Meeting: GANGS, where are they? Who are they? Why do they exist??? How gangs affect your business & community

Guest speaker—Sgt. Michael Talley

Sgt. Michael Talley

Michael Talley grew up in various violent housing projects, exposed daily to drug dealing and violent criminal acts committed in front of him. He fought off sometimes life-threatening pressure to join local gangs. Michael Talley could have been one of many negative statistics that we read about, but he grew out of the violence that surrounded him.  He has served as Patrolman & Sergeant in Patrol; Firearms & Drug Team Member; Executive Protection Detective guarding Mayor Douglas L. Wilder; Undercover Detective Narcotics; and Sergeant in charge of the Firearms & Fugitives Initiative.  He currently serves as Community Care Unit, Crime Prevention Sergeant, Richmond Police Department.

With Freddie Fields, past gang enforcer & member, now working with the Virginia Attorney General’s office

At the moment, Richmond Police have over 300 work orders to help clean up graffiti.  Or is it gang tags?  If your home or business has been affected, you know the blemish it puts on your neighborhood & community. Who is responsible? How can it be prevented? Join us and learn the difference between graffiti and a gang tag—and what is being done to combat this crime.

Also being shown, a short film: “Choosing the Wrong Family: Virginia Fights Back” developed by the Attorney General’s Office.
