Central Virginia Bank

Think You Are Internet Secure? THINK AGAIN

Come and meet Steve Werby, Information Security Officer, Technology Services, Virginia Commonwealth University. He will be sharing some examples of current security breaches and some of his expertise and perspective that will help keep your information safe.

  • How online banking ‘trojans’ are wiping our small businesses' bank accounts and what can be done to stop it
  • The dirty little secret about antivirus software - it won't protect against all malicious software...not even close
  • How your employees' personal use of social media like Facebook and Twitter is putting you at risk

Small business managers, owners, and anyone who participates on e-mail, in social media, or who oversees websites or other internet activity, will hear useful security information to implement NOW.

Steve Werby is the Information Security Officer at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), where he leads the university's information security management program.  His responsibilities include information security policy, governance, risk management, security awareness and threat management.  Steve became involved in Internet development and security during the Dot-com bubble, with the founding of the first of his two Internet consultancies providing services to small and medium businesses worldwide.  In addition to his role at VCU, he's active in the security research community and is heavily involved in user awareness efforts through social media and his blog, Justifiable Paranoia.

The importance of protecting yourself, your business, your customer information is paramount.  Hackers and disreputable “phish’ers” can be not only tremendous irritations, but also problems that can result in the loss of business and reputation.

Every business is known for something—is your brand creating the impression you want it to?

Every day, as consumers, we make buying decisions based on the reputation of a company’s brand. We consider whether we trust a brand, believe in a brand, and agree with a brand. Brands make us want things, spend money, and even think a certain way. A brand generates feelings, builds emotional connections and becomes the shorthand that influences our buying behavior. And the logo is only the beginning.

Lisa Moroni-Hall and Cathy McPherson from Brandevotion will discuss how distinctive brands are built both behaviorally and visually, and provide essential steps to developing a memorable brand.

Lisa Moroni-Hall serves as Managing Partner and Account Director for Brandevotion.  Lisa’s experience covers a wide breadth of disciplines with emphasis in human resource management, organizational development and brand strategy & development. She has worked with a variety of companies such as regional airlines, international hotels, leading financial institutions and non-profit organizations. Her clients include UPS, Fairfield Inn by Marriott, Vizada, SkyTerra, PLANIT Technology Group, Susquehanna Bancshares, Luck Stone and Goodwill Industries.  Prior to launching Brandevotion, Lisa held positions with First Union National Bank, Circuit City and most recently as VP of BrandInside, the brand development division of The Martin Agency.

Cat.jpgCathy Ferris McPherson is a Senior Consultant for Brandevotion, with over 25 years experience in all aspects of marketing.  She has worked closely with companies such as Luck Stone, DuPont Fibers Federal Credit Union, World Access, Fairfield Inn by Marriot, PLANIT Technology Group and Goodwill Industries in the area of brand strategy & development.   As a professionally trained focus group moderator, She has provided customer service and retail marketing training for a number of individual retailers and shopping center developers, and has been a keynote speaker for professional conferences on the topics of gender communications, basic marketing skills, and brand development.  Cathy is an associate professor of business administration and marketing communication for Mary Baldwin College. She is a Co-Founder of Dress for Success Richmond, a non-profit organization that helps low-income women successfully prepare to enter the job market.

What’s up with Virginia’s Drug Courts?

Community Meeting:  Friday, February 26, 7:45am – 9:00am

Chippenham Medical Center / Kraus Auditorium (enter through Tucker Pavilion and go right immediately)

They were in, and then they were out in Chesterfield County.  Then they were back in again!  Now Johnny Joannou is trying to de-fund them ---- again. Other counties and cities are trying to establish or sustain existing courts.  Their success is questioned by few.  If you’ve been to a graduation, you know the compelling success stories that show how lives are changed.  What is the future for drug courts in the current political and economic environment?

Tara Kunkel and Melanie Meadows of the Chesterfield County Adult and Juvenile Drug Court Programs will join us on Friday morning, February 26th to set the record straight on Virginia drug courts – their funding and their future.  Kunkel and Meadows also serve on the Virginia Drug Court Association’s board of directors and bring a statewide perspective to the issue.

Join us for this important presentation.  Plenty of time will be allowed for questions and answers.

Early Bird coffee, juice, fruit and muffins are available at 7:45am. This is a great opportunity for networking and learning more about substance abuse prevention in Central VA and beyond.

Please indicate whether you will attend so we can insure enough seating for the auditorium.  The outreach list for this meeting is expanded to invite colleagues from around the state who are interested.  Email rick.mckeel@drugfreealliance.org if you plan to attend.  Also include the number coming if you plan to bring guests.

Motorcycle Grand Tour of Virginia

April 9-Nov. 1

This statewide tour of Virginia, coordinated by the Governor’s Motorcycle Advisory Council, the Virginia Motorcycle Dealer's Association, Virginia Hospitality & Travel Assn. and the Virginia Tourism Corp. in an effort to promote motorcycle tourism, safety and awareness within the Commonwealth. Hundreds of motorcyclists will stop at official sponsors’ destinations -- restaurants, hotels, visitor centers, attractions, motorcycle shops, etc. -- to get their ride passports stamped. This provides an excellent opportunity to sell your region, products or services directly to motorcyclists. Sponsors will also receive valuable publicity on all ride materials. Several levels of sponsorship are available to meet any budget.  In 2009, more than 500 cyclists participated in the first Grand Tour as well as 58 statewide sponsors. We are striving for even greater participation in 2010! Check out the ride website at www.vamotorcycletour.com.

Donate a prize package for the tour! Virginia travel industry prize packages such as attraction tickets, overnight stays, tours or merchandise are other ways to sell your destination – whether you’re an official ride sponsor or not.  Questions? Contact Diana Boxey, ride manager, at motorcycletourva@gmail.com.
