Virginia Retail Loss Prevention Conference

Member Power Hour

October 2 & 3, 2008

Wyndham Hotel & Conference Center, Virginia Beach

Protecting profits ranks as one of the top concerns for retailers, unfortunately, retail theft continues to reduce the earnings of these hardworking business people. Employee theft and shoplifting, costs the retail industry billions of dollars per year. Law enforcement continues to make strides, but thieves grow more clever and persistent. Retailers who are knowledgeable about loss prevention feel more secure in their environment and better prepared to handle a theft situation. Fortunately, retailers have an advocate in safeguarding their stores and defending their industry.

The 19th Annual Valor Awards

Economic Forecast BreakfastBob Phibbs

Friday, November 14, 2008

Guest Speaker Paul E. Galanti Commander, US Navy (Retired)

The 19th Annual Valor Awards breakfast is a way for the business community to recognize area law enforcement officers, firefighters and emergency services providers who have gone above and beyond the call of duty in serving their community.  First responders in the City of Richmond and the counties of Hanover, Henrico and Chesterfield, and the Town of Ashland are presented awards for selfless acts involving personal risk beyond which should be expected while performing their duties.  Area police and fire chiefs will present the awards.  Show your appreciation to these dedicated men and women by being a sponsor as well as attending the Valor Awards.

Paul Galanti, entrepreneur, author, association/society director, webmaster, speaker and P.O.W, defines and personifies the meaning of Valor.  He was a prisoner of war for nearly seven years in North Vietnam's infamous Hanoi Hilton complex. He not only maintained his sanity, he has managed, since his return in February 1973, to excel in several different fields. He maintains a positive attitude despite having been deprived of "what should have been some of the best years of my life."  "Not so," says Galanti, "the best years are here, now"!   In 2002, Paul was appointed as the Director of National Services Officers for the American Ex-Prisoners of War and currently is a service legislative officer for that organization and a columnist in its bulletin. In 2003, he was appointed by Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Anthony J. Principi to serve on the Secretary's Advisory Committee on Former POWs. Galanti was named to serve on the Board of Virginia's new Department of Veterans' Services by Governor Mark Warner. He was reappointed by Governor Tim Kaine and elected Chairman of the Board of Veterans Services in 2006. For more about his remarkable background and experience, click here.

Memories Galore joins nationwide Scrap Pink™ campaign

Sept. 26–28, 2008, local scrapbooking enthusiasts will come together for the second annual Scrap Pink weekend, a fundraising event created by Scrapbooks etc.® magazine to benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation for the Cure®. Hosting the event is Memories Galore, with stores located at 4800 Market Square Lane, Suite B in Midlothian at Brandermill, and 3991 Deep Rock Road in Richmond’s West End.

On Scrap Pink weekend, consumers participate in exciting in-store crops, where scrapbookers will create layouts and projects celebrating the special women in their lives. Consumers pay to attend the crop, and $10 of this fee is donated to support Komen’s mission to find a cure for breast cancer through research, education, screening, and treatment. To ensure adequate space for participants, shop owner Angela Allen recommends that scrapbookers call in advance of Scrap Pink weekend. To sign-up for Scrap Pink or for more details about the local event, call 804.744.6500 for Brandermill or 804.565.2000 for West End, or visit either store. Richmond Folk Festival

October 10-12

Venture Richmond and the National Council for Traditional Arts have teamed up to produce the first annual Richmond Folk Festival. The festival will be held in association with The National Folk Festival and the American Folk Festival.

Keeping with tradition, the folk festival will be an event for the whole family and will feature music, folk art and other facets of folk life from around the world.

And even better than that, the Richmond Folk Festival is keeping the best tradition of all … it's free. That's right -- seven stages, over 30 performing groups, access to folk life marketplaces and ethnic foods, all for no admission cost. Over the next few weeks leading up to the festival, Richmond.com will be previewing some of the performers and events, but for now, some examples:

  • Dale Watson is a classic country artist, a one-man revival of Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson.
  • Dan Tyminski is normally found on the road with Allison Karuss & Union Station, but Tyminski has brought together his own group of good 'ol boys for The Dan Tyminski Band.  Tyminksi, is known for being the singing voice of George Clooney in "O Brother Where Art Thou?"
  • Nukariik, is a duo that performs Innuit throat singing as well as Hawaiian guitar masters Ledward Ka'apana and Mike Kaawa.

Aside from music, attendees will also be given a glimpse into other traditions, like art and, best of all, food.

  • Ernesto Gomez and David Amoroso will display their work centering on Mexican Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, traditions.
  • Wilhelm and Melanie Wanders from Manassas will have creations in chocolate and marzipan.

So, there's going to be music, from country to Inuit throat singing, and artisans from the dead to the delicious, and just about everything in between.

This has only scratched the surface of what the Richmond Folk Festival is going to have to offer. Be sure to check back with Richmond.com as the big weekend approaches to get the low-down on the newest Richmond tradition.

ID Theft Red Flags Rule: How to Help Businesses Comply

Auto Dealers, Mortgage Brokers, Utility Companies are Among Non-Banking Entities That Must Comply by Nov. 1

With all the focus on banks and credit unions' work to comply with the ID Theft Red Flags Rule, many in the financial services industry have forgotten that the largest share of entities impacted by this new regulation are non-banking institutions—finance companies, automobile dealers, mortgage brokers, etc. And while banking institutions have their own hands full ensuring Red Flags compliance, they still can perform great customer service by assisting business customers who also must comply with the regulation.
