Energy Star Sales Tax Holiday—October 5-8, 2007
The first weekend of October (Oct. 5 – 8, 2007) again offers all retailers the opportunity to participate in a Sales Tax Holiday.
For retailers selling Energy Star qualified products, the following items will be tax exempt by law during this 4 day period:
“Energy Star qualifiedproducts with a sales price of $2,500 or less per product purchased for noncommercial home or personal use. For the purposes of this exemption, an Energy Star qualifiedproduct is any dishwasher, clothes washer, air conditioner, ceiling fan, compactfluorescent light bulb, dehumidifier, programmable thermostat, or refrigerator, the energy efficiency of which has been designated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and the United States Department of Energy as meeting or exceeding each such agency's requirements under the Energy Star program.”
All retailers may participate in this Sales Tax Holiday event if they wish to pay the 5% tax for their customers. Participating retailers will be permitted to advertise during the 14 pays prior to the event and during the event that they will pay the tax for their customers during the 4 day holiday. Remember, a retailer is prohibited by law from absorbing the tax for their customer or advertising an absorption of the tax at any time other than during a specific Sales Tax Holiday period.

(A.C.I.) has been selected by the Association to publish the 1st Annual Retail Merchants Association Membership Directory in January, 2008. They are dedicated to providing you with a publication that will truly prove to be a valuable tool…one which each member will use regularly throughout the entire year.
A.C.I. will be producing 3,500+ copies of the attractive full-color guide, which will be distributed to all members, including new members who join throughout the year. Additional copies will also be distributed at networking events and other Association functions held during the year.

Crossroads Art Center Opening Sept. 21
The All Media Show located in the Rhoda MacCallum Gallery opens with a reception Friday September 21st, 6-9 pm. The show runs through October 10th. Juror is Carolyn German. Featured artists for the month are Linda Hollett-Bazouzi, Beverly Perdue, Christaphora Robeers, Susan Stuller, Bob Procida, Carolyn German, Charles McDonald, II and Tom Yeamans’ collection of Movie Posters. Music is by Dave and Dave who are an organ-and-drums combo that pulls from the jazz, funk, rock and R&B schools of music. The Nonprofit Sponsor for the Opening is River City Blues Society of Richmond .
The Season Finale for 3rd Thursday
Have a blue martini on the terrace and salute the club scene as the theme for the last 3rd Thursdays event of 2007 at VMFA, Sept. 20 from 6 to 9 pm. Music will be by DJ Mr. G's R&B Dance Party. Science Museum of Virginia Seeks Cultural Groups
Do you have a holiday tradition you love to share? Are you a member of a cultural group that decorates distinctively for the holidays? Do you know a group that makes unusual holiday-related crafts or special food? How about a musical group, chorus or dance troupe? The Science Museum is looking for cultural groups to join in the museum’s annual Joy From The World festivities.
“We’re adding new elements to Joy From The World this year,” says search coordinator Katie Gantt. “We’re looking forward to welcoming back our existing cultural participants and we’d like to include new groups to reflect the cultural mix that is Richmond today.”

Richmond’s World Duathlon Showdown
Over 500 of the world’s best male and female duathletes from 30 countries will be competing in the McDonald’s ITU Duathlon Long Course World Championship in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday, October 21 st. The pros will have a $50,000 prize purse to divvy up, while age group athletes, many of whom train and race in our area, will go at it for bragging rights.
Four-time world champion, Benny Vansteelant, of Belgium, is the odds-on favorite. “I am looking forward to race on an interesting location as this race site seems to be,” said Vansteelant. “It is quite new for me to race in the middle of high buildings like this and hope to see a lot of spectators out there.”
The run-bike-run event loops through many of Richmond fairest streets, parks and neighborhoods starting at 7:30 a.m., with the all important transition area slated for a centrally located parcel of land behind the Virginia War Memorial on 2nd Street. The long course format features a 15k run, a 76k bike, and a 7.5k run which offers spectators and volunteers plenty of opportunities to support these splendid athletes as they lay it all on the line.
